Get your dog, or your friend’s dog, to bring you to our FREE event, the WSCR Dog PAWty: a mini-dog fest with fun activities for you and your four-legged friend(s). Food trucks will also be available!  We thank TD Canada Trust, our main sponsor, West Springs Church, and the City of Calgary’s Ward Community Event Grant program for their generous support of this community event.

WSCRCA’s 14th Annual Community Recycling Event a Success!

We held our 14th Annual Recycling Event on June 6th, 2021, at the Calgary French & International School and had another record turnout with over 600 vehicles, plus walk-in traffic.

This event would not have been possible without our community volunteers who help to organize and run this event. If you want to be one of those people and are interested in supporting your local community, please reach out to us at volunteer@wscr.ca to find out the benefits of volunteering and available opportunities.

With our volunteers’ help, we were able to:

  • Fill a truck with thousands of pounds of clothing for the Cerebral Palsy Association of Alberta
  • Thousands of pounds of electronics were diverted from the landfill thanks to Shanked Computer Recycling
  • Collected dozens of bikes to be shipped to kids in need in Cameroon
  • Filled a large truck with household items and furniture which will help support the community through the Women In Need Society (WINS)
  • And of course, the City of Calgary once again supplied their cardboard recycling truck, an organics truck, and three waste trucks, which were all filled by the community residents
  • Finally, the event could not have been a success without us being able to collect much needed donations for the Calgary Food Bank (nearly 1,000 pounds of food and $500 in cash) – WAY TO GO COUGAR RIDGE / WEST SPRINGS COMMUNITY

This event could also not have such a huge success without CFIS allowing us to use their parking lot again, our sponsors, and nearly 30 community volunteers and WSCRCA board members who participated in this event. Thanks to you all!

If you are interested in learning more about where some of the donated / recycled items went, or about our sponsors, please check out the following links:

2021 WSCRCA AGM YEAR IN REVIEW

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our 2021 WSCRCA AGM on June 9th. We once again exceeded our prior attendance numbers, with nearly 50 participants in attendance. It is clear that conducting these AGMs online provides a more accessible forum for our members. With the provincial government’s passing of Bill 53, it allows us to continue to conduct these going forward, and hopefully helps to draw out more and more members to these important meetings.

This past year has continued to be a very challenging year for all of us, impacting many of our community members, businesses, and key, public services. Our association has felt the impact and had to unfortunately cancel many events over the past year, which have historically supported hundreds of our community members, including our soccer league, the stampede breakfast, recycling event, skating events, and the community ski night, to name a few.

Amidst all this, and with the support of our creative and dedicated volunteers, we were still fortunate to be able to provide a couple of legacy programs (Community Garden which donated 176 pounds of produce to the Calgary Food Bank, and the Santa Meet & Greet event which we conducted over Zoom), as well as created a few, new, covid-friendly events (Movie-In-The Park and Halloween at the Pumpkin Patch).

I would like to recognize our board and community volunteers who continue to work hard to find ways to provide back and support our local community. Their contributions are critical to helping the WSCRCA Board accomplish the objectives of the Association.

As an example, the WSCRCA was able to donate financial support to the following four local organizations who serve the community with critical, key services:

Please take a moment to visit these organizations online and learn more about how they support our community.

The below infographic attempts to highlight the tremendous work that our volunteers have contributed to this past year:

We are now looking forward to continuing to build the programs for this upcoming year, including:

  • Community Garden which is already underway and running by our garden committee is a go again this year
  • The Soccer League is in flight with lots of credit going to the volunteers who are working hard to provide a program, while adhering to evolving covid guidelines
  • Movie-in-the-Park and the Dog Pawty events which are in planning for late fall
  • Plus, several other events (check out our website and keep your membership active to stay in the know)

It’s a lot of great work by many talented volunteers who together help make this a strong community which is focused on serving and supporting each other. For a list of our Board volunteers, please visit our website at www.wscr.ca.

When interacting with one of our volunteers, please take a moment to thank them for their efforts. Working together is how we will continue to build a strong and safe community.

Thank you and I encourage everyone to stay healthy and be diligent in practicing social distancing as you take care of yourselves, your families and help to support the vulnerable in our community.

Best Regards,

Paul Ghazar
President, West Springs / Cougar Ridge Community Association
